This brief tutorial will instruct you on how to configure Music On Hold for Asterisk. Different categories may be defined here. You can upload any mp3 or wav file to use for music on hold. Typically, the audio file is created, edited, and previewed prior to uploading onto the Asterisk server.

  • Login as admin (or maint) to the web interface (FreePBX, Elastix, Trixbox, etc.)
  • Navigate to the PBX Settings.
  • On the left side of the page click the Music on Hold link.
  • Choose the Music category on the left side of the page. The "default" category is opened by default and usually has 3 built-in music on hold tracks.
  • To Add a Category click the Add Music Category button. Enter a name for the newly defined category and click the "Submit Changes" button.
  • To upload Music on Hold tracks, select the appropriate category where you want to store the files, click the browse button, choose the music file to upload, and finally click the "Upload" button.
  • To enable Random Play for a category, click the category link, then click the "Enable Random Play" button.
  • Click the Submit button when done.
  • To apply the changes to Asterisk, click the "Apply Changes" Bar at the top of the page.
